Organic Wool

In August 2007, Llynfi Textiles were delighted to become the first Soil Association certified dyers in the UK for the natural dyeing of wool yarns.

To qualify as an organic textile, fibres have to meet Global Organic Standards from farm right through to final product. For wool, this means the sheep are kept to the Standards; the fleece is scoured (cleaned), carded and spun at a mill certified to Organic Standards, the dyeing is certified and also the weaving and/or knitting. For more information see www.soilassociation.org. Organic Standards are not only about traceability and reducing chemical inputs, but also ensuring fair working conditions.

Our wool is all British - grown here, spun and dyed here. Our yarns are sourced from Garthenor Organic Pure Wool, and are from native breeds of British sheep. And, as we are certified by the Soil Association for dyeing, we can state with confidence that our yarns are fully organic. Our knits are not currently covered by our organic licence - as we are not large manufacturers it is impractical to implement the necessary paperwork. But be assured that we only use our own dyed yarns, and the knitting process does not involve any additional inputs other than a gentle wash with approved washing detergents, as used after the dyeing process.

If you would like to see samples of our colours, we recommend our sample cards priced at £3.50. These show the dyed colours on 4-ply and double knit Shetland yarns, available for handkitting. These are the same yarns we use for our knitwear.
